Yair Klartag ยท In A Place Where There Is No Noise, Strive To Be A Noise

Note

"He would also say: The boor cannot be sin-fearing, the ignoramus cannot be pious, The bashful cannot learn, the short-tempered cannot teach, nor does the one who trades profusely grow wise. And, in a place where there are no men, strive to be a man." (Pirkei Avot 2:5)

The piece deals with two types of sound - sounds with a defined pitch and noises. The way we perceive the two types of sound is fundamentally different - while a sound with a defined pitch (what is sometimes simply referred to as "sound") is interpreted as carrying a concrete meaning and requires attention, noise is perceived as a blurred object in the background - an object that is sometimes defined negatively - as a state where there is no other sound at the foreground. The two types of sounds are also very different in terms of acoustic structure: while a sound with a defined pitch is a hierarchical structure in which the fundamental frequency stands out and the other frequencies are harmonic to it, noise is a distributed acoustic structure - in which all frequencies have a similar energy potential.

The image of a place without noise was therefore a source of inspiration for the work. What happens where the noises disappear? Is there only silence? Or do only pure harmonic sounds remain? Is noise a necessary element in a natural and healthy sound system? During the work, the concept of "noise" takes on broader meanings - when rhythmic textures interrupt each other and create consistent disturbances to the musical line.
